Pottery that supports the Asian community

Hello! My name is Emily Woo. Bowls For The Heart is my senior legacy project that strives to give back to Chinatown businesses and the Asian elderly community. For every handmade bowl that is purchased, all the proceeds will be donated to Heart of Dinner, a charity that purchases food from Chinatown businesses then gives out care packages with meals and groceries to the elderly Asian community. Also, for every bowl that is purchased, I will be donating a bowl to Heart of Dinner to include in their care packages.

Legacy

Throughout high school I've already made my legacy as an art kid. People have seen it as I stride through the hallway pridefully wearing clay covered clothes or knowing that if they needed to find me, I'd probably be in the art room. I wanted to use this senior legacy project to talk about my love for art, but also for my dedication to helping others through activism.

Seeing the Asian discrimination that has increased over the pandemic has been difficult. Aside from the permanent feeling of fear that will reside with me, I felt hopeless. Sharing experiences with racism and teaching others against discrimination were steps in the right direction, but I felt I wasn't doing enough. Through this project, I found a way to directly support Asian owned businesses, giving the Asian elderly community access to food, and spreading my art through the West Windsor - Plainsboro community.

Though this project is over, I will always continue to use my art to help others.

Bowl Donations

On July 28, 2021 I finalized the last steps of Bowls For The Heart and donated almost 100 bowls as well as all cash donations to Heart of Dinner. Getting to hear directly from Moonlynn Tsai and visiting the Heart of Dinner headquarters, reminded me why I did this project. The Asian elderly community has been put at such a risk this past year from the the increase in food insecurity, a virus not all are able to recover from, and the rise in Asian hate. My contributions feel minimal compared to the size of these problems but knowing that over 50 packages were funded, 100 bowls were donated, and so many people became more informed on these issues makes me hopeful for the future. Thank you all for all of your support during this project and stay tuned for this is not the last of Bowls For The Heart.
